In short

  • Most people are walking the same day and back at a desk job within two weeks after a keyhole or robotic repair.
  • Driving returns when you can brake hard without flinching, not on a fixed date. For most people that is week three.
  • Heavy lifting waits about six weeks. The mesh holds from day one, but the tissue growing into it needs that time.

People ask how long recovery takes and get an average. Averages are not much use when you are deciding which week to book off work.

This page sets out what each week usually allows after a straightforward repair, and what is still too early. A large repair, a repeat repair or an emergency runs slower. That is expected, and your own plan is set before the date.

The first three days

You will be walking the same day or the next morning. That is deliberate. Early walking cuts the risk of clots and chest trouble, and it does not harm the repair.

Pain is usually a sore, dragging ache rather than a sharp one. Simple painkillers handle it for most people. Take them on time for the first few days instead of waiting for the pain to build.

Most keyhole and robotic repairs go home the same day or the next. A large open repair may stay a night or two longer.

What each week usually looks like after a straightforward repair.

Weeks one and two: back to ordinary life

Week one is walking, eating normally and keeping the wound dry and clean. Short walks several times a day beat one long one.

Most people with a desk job are back at it in week two. If your work involves lifting, climbing or driving all day, plan for longer and say so early.

Bruising and a firm ridge under the wound are usual. So is a little swelling. It settles over a few weeks.

Driving, the gym and lifting

Driving is not a date. The test is simple. Sit in the car and press the brake as hard as you would in an emergency. If you flinch or hold back, you are not ready. For most people that point comes in week three.

Light gym work starts around week four and builds up. Running, rowing and lifting come back gradually across weeks four to six.

Heavy lifting waits about six weeks. The mesh is strong from the moment it is placed. What takes time is your own tissue growing into it.

Week 1Short walks outside. Shower once the dressing allows.Driving. Going back to work

Weeks 4 to 6Light gym work built up slowly. Swimming.Maximal lifting. Contact sport

Ask for your own timeline at the pre-operative visit. It is set by the repair you are having, not by an average.

What is not normal

What is not normal

  • Pain that climbs instead of settling after the first few days
  • Redness spreading from the wound, or fluid leaking from it
  • Fever
  • A swelling that turns hard and tender
  • Vomiting, or no wind passed

Any of these is a reason to ring rather than wait for the review.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I return to work after hernia surgery?

Desk work in about two weeks after a keyhole or robotic repair. Manual work nearer six weeks. Open repairs of large hernias take longer. Tell us what your job involves and the answer can be given for your case.

When can I drive after hernia surgery?

When you can brake hard without flinching, and when you are off strong painkillers. That is usually around week three. Check your insurer's wording too.

When can I lift weights again?

Light work from about week four, built up slowly. Maximal lifting at about six weeks. The wait is for your tissue to grow into the mesh, not for the mesh itself.

Is swelling at the site normal after hernia surgery?

Yes. A soft swelling at the repair is common in the first weeks and usually settles without treatment. A swelling that turns hard, tender or red needs to be seen.

Will the hernia come back if I go back to work too early?

A single heavy lift is unlikely to undo a mesh repair. Repeated heavy work in the first weeks is a different matter, and it is worth waiting out.
