Dr Harsh Shah, MS, MCh (Surgical Gastroenterology), DrNB (Surgical Gastroenterology), is a GI and robotic surgeon at Shah's Gastro, Cancer & Robotic Surgery Centre, with OPD at Gota, Ahmedabad and surgery at Apollo Hospital, Bhat, Gandhinagar. He treats hernias of the groin, navel, abdominal wall and diaphragm by open, laparoscopic and robotic repair.
Inguinal (groin), umbilical (navel), ventral and incisional, hiatal, femoral, epigastric, Spigelian, parastomal, diastasis recti, and complex or recurrent hernias — including hernias that have come back after a previous repair elsewhere.
All three are offered. The approach is chosen from the size and site of the defect, whether the hernia has been repaired before, the patient's build, and fitness for a longer anaesthetic. It is decided at consultation after examination and, where needed, a CT scan — not by preference alone.
In adults, almost always. Closing the defect with sutures alone carries a higher rate of recurrence, so a mesh is used to reinforce the abdominal wall. The type of mesh and the plane it is placed in depend on the hernia and on whether there has been a previous repair.
Usually one night. A small inguinal repair is often day-care. A large ventral, incisional or complex repair may need two to four days, and sometimes a drain.

Robotic hernia surgery is the most advanced form of “keyhole” repair. The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into tiny, precise actions inside the body for a better, safer recovery.
It is a common solution for patients with complex or repeat hernias who want to get back to their normal life as quickly as possible.
We use a high-tech system with 3D “HD” vision and special instruments that move just like a human hand.
We use a high-quality, lightweight mesh placed with perfect accuracy to strengthen the area and prevent the hernia from coming back.
The robot removes any tiny hand shakes, allowing the surgeon to operate with much more stability and safety than standard surgery.
| Feature | Standard Laparoscopic | Robotic Hernia Surgery |
|---|---|---|
| Vision | 2D Flat Image | 3D Crystal Clear Depth |
| Precision | Rigid Instruments | Wristed Instruments (360° motion) |
| Pain | Moderate | Minimal (Less tissue trauma) |
| Recovery | 1-2 Weeks | Days (Often back to work in 3-5 days) |
| Recurrence Risk | Low | Lowest (Due to precise suturing) |
