In short

  • Most people walk a few steps on the day of hernia surgery. Early walking lowers the risk of chest infection and clots in the legs.
  • In the first week, take short walks around the home several times a day. Add a little each day and stop before it hurts.
  • Most people are back to a gentle morning walk in the second week and their usual pace within three to four weeks.

Many people expect to rest in bed for days after a hernia operation. In fact, getting up and walking early is one of the most helpful things you can do.

This page explains why, and how to build up your walking safely.

Why walking starts on day one

Lying still for long slows the blood flow in the legs. This raises the risk of a clot. Shallow breathing in bed can also lead to a chest infection.

Walking keeps the blood moving and helps you breathe deeply. It also wakes up the bowel, which eases gas and constipation.

The first steps

  1. Sit up slowly on the edge of the bed. Wait a minute in case you feel dizzy.
  2. Stand with someone beside you for the first time.
  3. Walk a few steps, stand tall and breathe normally.
  4. Sit down if you feel faint, and tell the nurse.

Holding a small pillow over the wound can make standing up more comfortable.

Stairs and going out

Stairs are fine from the start. Hold the rail, go slowly, and lead with your stronger leg going up. Most people climb stairs before they leave hospital.

A walk outside is fine once you feel steady. Wear loose clothes so nothing rubs the wound. Carry nothing heavy.

Signs to stop and call

Signs to stop and call

  • Pain or swelling in one calf, or a leg that turns warm and red.
  • Sudden breathlessness or chest pain.
  • Pain in the wound that keeps getting worse with walking.
  • Fever, or a wound that turns red or leaks.

Calf pain with breathlessness needs a hospital at once.

Frequently asked questions

When can I walk after hernia surgery?

Most people walk a few steps with help a few hours after keyhole or robotic repair, often on the same day.

How much should I walk in the first week?

Short walks around the house several times a day. Add a few minutes each day. Stop before you feel tired or sore.

Can I climb stairs after hernia surgery?

Yes. Go slowly, hold the rail and take one step at a time. Most people manage stairs before they go home.

When can I go back to my morning walk?
