In short

  • A hernia repair has no single price. The size of the defect, the mesh, the route and the length of stay decide the final figure.
  • Ask for an itemised estimate. It must name the mesh, the room category, the number of nights, and say clearly what is not included.
  • Robotic repair usually costs more than keyhole for the same hernia, because each case adds instrument and drape costs that other routes do not.

Most people who search this want one number. A hernia repair does not have one. Any figure quoted before the hernia is examined and scanned is a guess.

The price follows what the hernia turns out to need. How big is the defect. Will the muscle layer close. What mesh goes in. One side or both. How many nights you stay.

This page sets out what moves the figure, so that you can read an estimate when you are handed one. For an estimate for your own hernia, bring your scans to the OPD, or send them ahead of the visit.

Seven things that decide what a hernia repair costs

A 2 cm umbilical defect and a 12 cm incisional defect are different operations with one name. The larger one needs a larger mesh. It needs more fixation and more theatre time. It more often needs a night or two in hospital.

Sometimes the muscle edges will not meet without tension. The repair then becomes a reconstruction rather than a patch, and the cost follows that.

Both groins are often repaired at one sitting. That is one anaesthetic, one admission and one recovery. It costs more than one side. It costs less than two separate operations.

A second, silent hernia is sometimes found during the operation. Ask beforehand how that is billed.

Mesh is often the largest single item in the bill, and the range is wide. A plain lightweight mesh for a groin repair is one thing. A coated mesh that will sit against bowel is another. A biological mesh for an infected field is another again. The prices are not close to each other.

The choice is a clinical one. The anatomy, and the plane the mesh will lie in, decide it. The budget does not. You are entitled to be told which mesh is planned, and why.

Some large and repeat incisional hernias will not close without tension. The layers of the wall are then separated so that the defect can be closed. This is called a component separation, or a transversus abdominis release.

It is a longer operation with a longer stay. It is the biggest single step up in cost within hernia surgery. It is also why a repeat repair rarely costs what the first one did.

All three routes are valid, and each suits particular hernias. The robotic route adds instrument and drape costs to every case, so for the same hernia it usually sits highest on the day.

Whether that is worth paying for depends on the hernia, not on the technology. The case for the robot is strongest where the hard part is suturing deep in a tight plane. It is weakest in a small, simple repair.

Many groin and small umbilical repairs are day care, or a single night. Large ventral and incisional repairs are usually two nights or more.

Room category multiplies through the bill. On an insurance case it can also change what the policy pays, because room rent limits are often written as a share of the sum insured.

The billed amount and what you pay are two different numbers. On an insurance route your share is set by the pre-authorisation, the room rent cap, any co-payment, the sub-limits, and any waiting period on the policy.

Insurers treat robotic consumables differently from each other. Settle that in writing before admission, not at discharge.

What actually moves the number on a hernia estimate.

What a usable estimate should tell you

Ask for it itemised. A single total tells you nothing you can check. A usable estimate separates these lines.

  • surgeon, assistant and anaesthesia fees
  • theatre time, and how it is charged
  • the mesh, named, with its size
  • robotic consumables, if that route is planned
  • room and stay, with the category and the number of nights
  • tests before surgery, and the anaesthetic check
  • what is excluded

It should also say what happens if the findings change the plan. A hernia is sometimes bigger at operation than on the scan. A second defect is sometimes found beside the first. The right answer is a revised estimate in writing, not a surprise at discharge.

Expect a range. A precise figure offered before examination is not more reliable. It is only more confident.

Why the cheapest quote is not always the cheaper operation

Two things drive the long term cost of a hernia repair. One is recurrence. The other is lasting pain at the repair site.

Both send a patient back for more visits, more scans, and sometimes a second operation. A repeat repair through scarred tissue is a bigger job than the first one was.

Mesh that is too small for the defect is a known contributor. So is a repair closed under tension. So is fixation that does not respect the nerves of the groin.

None of this makes an expensive repair better. It means the fair comparison is the whole episode, not the day.

Questions worth asking before you agree

1
Which mesh is planned, what size, and in which plane will it sit?
2
Is one side being repaired, or both?
3
Will the muscle layer close, or is a release likely?
4
How many nights are you assuming, and in which room category?
5
What is not in this estimate?
6
If the findings change the plan, how and when will I be told what it now costs?
7
On my policy, what is likely to be my share, and is the robotic part covered?

Frequently asked questions

Where this is done

Hernia repair, open, laparoscopic and robotic, is carried out at Apollo Hospital, Bhat, Gandhinagar. The consultation, the examination and the estimate itself are at the Gota OPD in Ahmedabad.

You can read how the individual repairs are done on the pages for inguinal, umbilical, ventral and incisional and complex and recurrent hernia.

Is robotic hernia repair more expensive than laparoscopic?

For the same hernia, usually yes. The robotic route adds instrument and drape costs to each case. The gap narrows where the robot shortens a difficult reconstruction, or avoids a larger open cut. It is widest in a small, simple repair. That is one reason the route is chosen hernia by hernia.

Does health insurance cover robotic hernia surgery in India?

Hernia repair is covered by most indemnity policies once any waiting period has passed. How the robotic part is treated varies between insurers and between policies. Room rent limits, co-payment and sub-limits still apply. Get the position confirmed in the pre-authorisation, in writing, before admission.

Can I get a written estimate before admission?

Yes, and you should ask for one. Bring your scans, your insurance details, and the operation notes if the hernia has been repaired before. The estimate is prepared after the hernia has been examined and the imaging reviewed.

Why was I quoted a different figure elsewhere for the same operation?

Usually because something different was assumed. A different mesh. A different number of nights. A different room category, or a different route. Sometimes one estimate is itemised and the other is not. Compare the line items, not the totals.
