In short

  • Most people can fly about two weeks after a keyhole hernia repair, and after a large open repair the wait is longer.
  • Cabin air pressure does not burst a repair. The real risks are a clot in the leg and being far from help.
  • Do not lift your own cabin bag into the overhead locker. Ask for help, or check the bag into the hold instead.

People ask this because they have a wedding, a job, or a family visit already booked. The answer is usually kinder than they expect, but it depends on the journey as much as on the operation.

A one-hour hop to Mumbai and a nine-hour flight to London are different problems, and they have different waiting times.

The pressure myth, first

A common worry is that cabin pressure will pull a repair apart. It will not. Cabin pressure is held at roughly the level of a hill station, and a hernia repair is not an air-tight seal.

What does happen is that gas already in the bowel expands slightly, which can feel bloated for a hour or two. It is uncomfortable, not dangerous.

The three things that actually decide the date

A clot in the leg. Any operation raises the chance of a clot for a few weeks. Sitting still in a seat for hours raises it as well. The two together are the main medical reason to wait, and the reason long flights wait longer than short ones.

Distance from care. If something does go wrong in the first two weeks, you want to be where your records are and where your surgeon can see you. That argues for staying close until the first review visit is done.

The cabin bag. Hauling a bag into an overhead locker is a sharp, twisting lift with the arms above the head. It is the single worst movement of the whole journey, and it is easily avoided.

Travelling soon after surgery? Bring the dates to the consultation so the plan and any letter can be arranged.

How to make the flight easier

1
Take an aisle seat and get up every hour.
2
Move your ankles and calves while seated, a few minutes in every hour.
3
Drink water steadily. Avoid alcohol on the flight.
4
Wear the compression stockings if you were given them.
5
Put the seat belt low across the hips, below the wound, and use a folded scarf as padding.
6
Carry your medicines and discharge summary in the seat pocket, not in the hold.

Airline rules and fitness-to-fly letters

Airlines set their own rules for travel soon after surgery, and they are not the same. Some ask for a letter from the treating doctor if the flight falls within a set number of days of an operation. Others ask nothing at all.

Check with the airline before you book, not at the airport. A fitness-to-fly letter is simple to write when there is notice, and awkward to arrange on the morning of departure.

If you came to Ahmedabad for the operation

Patients who travel here for surgery are usually asked to stay locally until the first review, which is often at about a week. That visit is what makes the flight home comfortable rather than anxious, because the wound has been seen and the plan is set.

Frequently asked questions

Can cabin pressure make a hernia repair burst?

No. Cabin pressure changes are small and the repair is not an air-tight seal. Trapped gas in the bowel can expand a little and feel bloated, but it does not undo a repair.

How soon can I take a short domestic flight?

After a keyhole repair, many people fly within one to two weeks, provided pain is controlled and they can walk easily. A short hop is far less demanding than a long-haul flight.

What is the main risk of flying soon after surgery?

A clot in the leg. Surgery and sitting still for hours both raise that risk, and the two together raise it more. Walking, water and moving your ankles all reduce it.

Do airlines have rules about flying after an operation?

Many do, and they differ. Some ask for a fitness-to-fly letter within a set number of days of surgery. Check with your airline before booking and ask for a letter in good time.

What about the cabin bag?

Do not lift it into the overhead locker yourself. Ask cabin crew or a fellow passenger, or check the bag into the hold. That single lift is the most awkward moment of the journey.
