In short

  • Most hernias slip back in when you lie down. A soft one that does not hurt can be eased back with gentle, flat-hand pressure.
  • Never force a hernia that is hard, very painful or red. It can mean the bowel is stuck and needs a hospital that day.
  • Pushing it back does not close the hole in the belly wall. The lump returns when you stand, so a planned repair is still needed.

Many people with a hernia find that the lump goes away when they lie down and comes back when they stand. Some learn to press it back in with a hand. A common worry is whether this is safe.

For most hernias it is, if it is done gently. This page explains how, and when you should never try.

Why a hernia goes in and out

A hernia is a weak spot or hole in the belly wall. When you stand, cough or lift, the pressure inside the belly rises. Fat or a loop of bowel then pushes out through the hole and you see a lump.

When you lie flat, the pressure falls. The lump often slides back in by itself. Doctors call such a hernia reducible.

How to ease it back gently

  1. Lie flat on your back with a pillow under your knees. This relaxes the belly.
  2. Breathe slowly and wait a minute. Many lumps go back on their own.
  3. If it does not, place a flat hand over the lump. Press slowly and steadily towards the hole, not straight down.
  4. Stop if it hurts. Never squeeze, poke or push hard.

Does your lump go back easily, or has it started to stay out? A check helps you plan the repair before it gets stuck.

Signs that mean you should never push

Signs that mean you should never push

  • The lump is hard, tense or very tender.
  • The skin over it turns red, dark or purple.
  • You feel sick, vomit, or cannot pass wind or stool.
  • The pain keeps getting worse over a few hours.

These can mean the bowel is trapped and its blood supply is at risk. Pushing can hurt it further. Go to a hospital the same day.

Why pushing it back is not a treatment

Easing a hernia back gives comfort for a while. It does not close the hole. Over time the hole tends to widen, and the lump comes out more easily and stays out longer.

A lump that used to go back but now stays out is a sign to see your surgeon soon. A planned repair, when the hernia is still reducible, is simpler than an emergency one.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to push my hernia back in?

Gently easing a soft hernia that does not hurt back while lying down is usually fine. Never force it, and never push a hard or very painful lump.

What does reducible hernia mean?

It means the lump goes back inside the belly on its own when you lie down, or with gentle pressure. It is the usual state of a hernia.

My hernia would not go back in today. What should I do?

If it is soft and only mildly sore, lie down, relax and try once more. If it stays out and hurts, see a doctor the same day.

Does pushing the hernia back in cure it?

No. The hole in the belly wall stays. The lump comes out again when you stand, cough or strain. Only a repair closes the hole.

Should a doctor push a stuck hernia back?

A doctor may try gently in hospital, but only after checking that the bowel is healthy. Some stuck hernias need an operation instead.
