In short

  • Yes, in most cases. A past stroke does not stop a hernia repair, but a planned operation often waits some months after a recent stroke.
  • Never stop a blood thinner on your own. Your surgeon and stroke doctor decide together whether it is paused, and for how many days.
  • A stuck or very painful hernia is treated straight away, even soon after a stroke. Waiting is only for planned repairs.

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or a vessel bleeds. Many people recover well and later need a hernia repair.

A past stroke does not usually stop the operation. But the timing, the blood thinners and the recovery all need extra care. This page explains each one.

Why timing matters

In the months just after a stroke, the brain is still healing. An operation and anaesthesia in that time carry a higher chance of another stroke.

So a planned hernia repair often waits for some months. Your surgeon and your stroke doctor agree the timing together. A stuck or painful hernia is different. It is treated straight away.

Blood thinners and blood pressure

Most people take a blood thinner after a stroke. It lowers the chance of another one. Some are paused for a few days before surgery, and some are continued.

Never stop yours without advice. The team will give you a written plan with dates. Good blood pressure control before and after the operation also lowers the risk.

Swallowing and speech

Some people have trouble swallowing after a stroke. Tell the team. Tablets may be given in another form, and food and drink are restarted carefully.

If speech is affected, bring a family member who can help explain your needs and your usual routine.

Getting up and going home

A weak arm or leg makes it harder to get out of bed with a sore wound. Get up slowly, with help, for the first few days. Use your usual walking aid.

Avoid straining on the toilet. Drink enough water and eat fibre. Walk a little every few hours, as this also lowers the chance of a clot.

Seek help at once for any new weakness, face drooping or slurred speech.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have hernia surgery after a stroke?

Yes, in most cases. The main questions are how recent the stroke was and how your blood thinners are managed.

How long should I wait after a stroke?

For a planned repair, often some months. Your surgeon and your stroke doctor decide the timing together.

Do I stop my blood thinner before surgery?

Never on your own. Some are paused for a few days and some are continued. The team gives you a written plan.

What if my hernia gets stuck soon after a stroke?

A stuck or very painful hernia is an emergency. It is treated straight away, whatever the timing.

Will my weak side slow my recovery?

It can. Getting up needs more help, so a physiotherapist and family support are planned before you go home.
