In short

  • Yes. Gout rarely stops a hernia repair. A planned operation is set for a time when your gout is calm.
  • The stress of surgery, fasting and drinking less water can bring on a gout flare in the first few days after the operation.
  • Daily gout tablets usually carry on around surgery. Never stop them on your own, as stopping can itself trigger a flare.

Gout causes sudden, painful swelling in a joint, often the big toe, ankle or knee. It happens when uric acid builds up in the blood and forms crystals in the joint.

Gout is common, and so are hernias. This page explains how gout is planned around a hernia repair, and what to do if a flare comes after.

Why surgery can bring on a flare

An operation puts the body under stress. You also fast before it and may drink less water for a day or two. All of these can raise uric acid and trigger a flare.

A flare often comes in the first few days after surgery. Knowing this helps you spot it early and tell the team.

Your gout tablets

Many people with gout take a daily tablet to keep uric acid low. These usually carry on around surgery. Stopping them suddenly can itself bring on a flare.

Bring your full medicine list to the first visit. Your surgeon tells you which tablets to take on the day.

Have gout and a hernia? Bring your recent blood reports and full medicine list to the first visit.

Painkillers and your kidneys

Some painkillers used for gout do not suit weak kidneys, a sensitive stomach or certain heart conditions. Do not take any painkiller from a shop without asking.

The team gives you a pain plan that fits both the repair and your gout. Your recent kidney blood tests help them choose.

If a flare comes after surgery

Tell the team early if a joint becomes hot, red and painful. A flare can be treated, and it does not harm the hernia repair.

Keep walking gently as advised, as walking helps you recover. Drink plenty of water once you are allowed, and take your usual tablets as advised. Call at once if the wound becomes red or leaks, or if you get a fever.
