A blunt injury can tear a belly wall that was healthy before, but this is uncommon and nearly always comes with other injuries.
Far more often an injury simply reveals a hernia that was already forming, which is why the history alone cannot settle it.
A bulge that appears within hours of an accident needs a CT scan, because bowel can be trapped in the torn layers.
It is one of the commonest things we are asked. The bulge appeared after a fall, a road accident, or a hard day of lifting. Did that cause it?
Sometimes. Not usually.
The short answer
A healthy belly wall can tear from a blunt injury. It happens.
But it is uncommon, and it takes real force. A handlebar into the stomach, a seat belt in a crash, a kick from an animal.
Most bulges found after an injury are hernias that were already forming at a weak spot. The injury made the person look.
What a true injury hernia looks like
It shows itself early, not weeks later.
There is a mark on the skin where the force landed, pain over that spot, and a bulge under it within hours. The muscle edge can often be felt as a gap.
It rarely comes alone. The same force damages what lies behind the wall, so bowel, spleen, liver and bladder are all checked.
A bulge after an injury: what is likely and what is rare
What happened
How often
What it usually means
Bulge noticed days later
Common
A hernia that was already there
Bruise with no gap in the muscle
Common
Bleeding into the muscle, not a hernia
Bulge within hours of a direct blow
Uncommon
A true tear in the belly wall
Handlebar or seat-belt injury in a child
Uncommon
A tear needing a scan the same day
Bulge after a hard cough or lift
Common
Strain on a weak spot, not a tear
A bulge that appeared after an accident deserves a scan. Bring the casualty papers and any films you have.
A CT scan does two things here. It shows whether the muscle layers are torn, and it shows what has come through.
Bowel caught in a fresh tear is the danger. The edges are sharp and tight, so the blood supply can be pinched off quickly.
That is why a new bulge after a significant injury is not something to watch at home.
When the repair is done
It depends on what else is injured.
If bowel is trapped, the operation happens at once. If the tear is wide but nothing is caught, and there are other injuries to settle, repair can wait days or weeks.
Mesh is used when the field is clean. When bowel was opened, the layers are closed with stitches and a proper repair is planned later.
Lifting at work, and what it proves
People often need an answer for an employer or an insurer.
Here is the honest position. Lifting raises the pressure inside the belly, and pressure pushes contents through a weak spot. It does not usually create the weak spot.
So a hernia noticed at work is real, and it still needs repair. Whether the work caused it is a separate question, and the scan and the examination are what answer it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a single injury cause a hernia?
Yes, but it is uncommon. It takes a direct blow with force, and a bulge appears within hours.
How do doctors tell a new tear from an old hernia?
By the skin mark, how fast the bulge appeared, and a CT scan showing where the muscle layers are torn.
Is a hernia after an accident an emergency?
It can be. If bowel is caught in the torn layers it needs an operation the same day.
Can I claim that lifting at work caused my hernia?
Lifting adds pressure but rarely creates the weak spot. The examination and the scan answer that question.
