Often yes. A small belly button or upper belly hernia is commonly repaired in the same operation as a tummy tuck.
A large scar hernia needing a big mesh repair is often done first, with the tummy tuck planned months later once it has healed.
A tummy tuck tightens the muscle line and removes loose skin. It does not repair a hernia unless the gap is closed as well.
After pregnancies or weight loss, many people want the loose skin dealt with. At the same visit they are told there is also a hernia.
So the natural question is whether both can be done at once. Often they can. Sometimes it is wiser not to.
What a tummy tuck does and does not do
A tummy tuck removes loose skin and fat from the lower belly. It usually tightens the muscle line down the middle as well.
It does not, on its own, close a hernia. A hernia is a hole in the muscle layer, and it has to be found and repaired.
That is why two surgeons often work together. The hernia surgeon repairs the gap, and the plastic surgeon does the tuck.
When one operation makes sense
A small hernia at the belly button is the commonest case. In a tummy tuck the navel is freed and brought out at a new spot, so the hernia under it is in plain view.
A small upper belly hernia can be closed the same way. One anaesthetic, one recovery.
When two stages are safer
A large hernia in an old scar is different. Repairing it well may need a big mesh and wide work under the muscle.
A tummy tuck lifts a large flap of skin with a thin blood supply. Doing both at once puts the mesh close to that flap. If the skin heals poorly, the mesh is at risk.
So the hernia is often repaired first. The tuck follows some months later, once healing is complete.
Tummy tuck and hernia: one operation or two
Situation
Usual plan
Why
Small belly button hernia
One operation
The navel is moved anyway
Muscle gap with no hernia
Tummy tuck alone
The tuck tightens the line
Large scar hernia needing big mesh
Often two stages
Fewer wound problems
Smoker
Wait until stopped
The skin heals poorly
Another pregnancy planned
Hernia only, tuck later
Pregnancy undoes the tuck
