In short

  • Most small hernias do not cause bloating or constipation. A large hernia holding a loop of bowel can cause fullness after meals.
  • Constipation is more often a cause than a result. Straining on the toilet raises belly pressure and can make a hernia bigger.
  • Vomiting, a swollen belly, no gas or stool, and a hard painful hernia mean the bowel may be blocked. Seek care that day.

Bloating and constipation are very common. So are hernias. When someone has both, they often ask if the hernia is to blame. Sometimes it is, but usually it is not.

This page is about a hernia that has not yet been repaired. Constipation in the days after surgery is covered on a separate page.

When a hernia can cause bowel symptoms

Many hernias hold only fat. These do not affect the bowel. A larger hernia can hold a loop of bowel. When that loop fills with food and gas, you may feel a heavy, dragging fullness. The lump may get bigger after meals and smaller after you lie down.

Large hernias at the navel, in an old scar or beside a stoma are the ones most likely to do this.

Why constipation is usually the cause, not the result

Hard stools mean straining. Straining pushes up the pressure inside the belly, again and again. Over time that pressure can stretch a weak spot and make a hernia grow.

  1. Drink enough water through the day.
  2. Add fibre from fruit, vegetables, dal and whole grains.
  3. Walk every day.
  4. Do not hold your breath and push hard on the toilet.

A hiatal hernia is a different story

A hiatal hernia is in the chest, at the top of the stomach. It can cause fullness, burping and heartburn after meals. People often call this gas or bloating. It comes from the stomach and reflux, not from the bowel.

Warning signs of a blocked bowel

Warning signs of a blocked bowel

  • The hernia becomes hard, tender and will not go back.
  • You vomit, especially more than once.
  • Your belly swells and stays swollen.
  • You cannot pass gas or stool.

These signs need an emergency department the same day. A blocked or trapped bowel is treated more simply when it is caught early.

When repair helps

If a large hernia keeps causing fullness or comes out more with meals, repair is worth discussing. Returning the bowel and closing the gap removes the cause. If the bloating comes from food or the gut itself, the operation will not change it, and your doctor will look for other causes.

Frequently asked questions

Can an inguinal hernia cause gas and bloating?

A small inguinal hernia usually does not. A large one that holds a loop of bowel can cause a full, dragging feeling, especially after meals.

Can a hernia cause constipation?

Rarely. It is more often the other way round. Straining on the toilet puts pressure on the belly wall and can make a hernia grow.

Can a hiatal hernia cause bloating?

Yes. A hiatal hernia can cause fullness, burping and heartburn after meals. These come from the stomach, not the bowel.

How do I know if my hernia is blocking my bowel?

Warning signs are vomiting, a swollen belly, not passing gas or stool, and a hernia that is hard and painful. These need urgent care.

Will hernia surgery cure my bloating?

Only if the bloating comes from bowel trapped in a large hernia. Bloating from food, constipation or the gut itself needs its own treatment.
