In short

  • A mild temperature in the first day after hernia surgery is common. It is the body's normal response to the operation and usually settles.
  • A fever that starts two or more days later, or keeps returning, needs a check. The wound, chest and urine are the usual causes.
  • Call your surgeon for a high fever, shivering, a red or leaking wound, a cough with phlegm, or burning when passing urine.

It is worrying to find you have a temperature a day or two after a hernia repair. Many people fear the mesh is infected.

Most of the time it is something much simpler. This page explains what a fever after hernia surgery usually means, and how its timing helps tell the difference.

Why a mild fever in the first day is common

Any operation, even a small one, makes the body react. Healing tissue releases signals that can raise the temperature a little. This is not an infection.

It usually settles within a day with rest, fluids, walking and deep breaths. It is one reason the team checks your temperature before you go home.

Causes of a later fever

1
Chest. After an anaesthetic, the lungs may not fully open if you breathe shallowly because of pain. A cough with phlegm may follow.
2
Urine. Some people have a tube in the bladder for a short time, or find it hard to pass urine. Burning or frequent urine points here.
3
Wound. Redness that spreads, warmth, swelling or a discharge suggest a wound infection.

A mesh infection is rare. It usually shows as a red, painful, swollen wound, sometimes weeks after the operation.

What to check at home

  1. Measure your temperature with a thermometer and write it down with the time.
  2. Look at each wound for spreading redness, swelling or fluid.
  3. Notice a new cough, chest pain, or burning when passing urine.
  4. Keep drinking water, walk a little every few hours, and take deep breaths.

When to call or go to hospital

Call your surgeon for a high fever, shivering, a fever that keeps coming back, or any of the signs above. Go to a hospital at once if a fever comes with vomiting, a swollen belly, severe pain or breathlessness.

Early checks are simple. A wound or urine infection found early is usually treated without any change to the repair.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mild fever the day after hernia surgery normal?

Often, yes. The body reacts to any operation, and a slight temperature on the first day usually settles with rest, fluids and deep breaths.

What temperature should make me call my surgeon?

Call if the temperature is high, keeps coming back, or comes with shivering, a red wound, a cough or burning urine.

Can a fever mean the mesh is infected?

Rarely. A mesh infection usually shows as a red, swollen, painful wound or a discharge, sometimes weeks later. Your surgeon will check.

Can I take a fever tablet at home?

Take the painkiller or fever tablet your surgeon prescribed, at the dose advised. Still call if the fever returns or you feel unwell.

How do I lower the chance of fever after surgery?

Walk early, breathe deeply, drink enough fluids, keep the wound clean and dry, and keep blood sugar under control if you have diabetes.
