In short

  • In the first week most people sleep on their back with a pillow under the knees. This keeps the belly relaxed and eases pulling.
  • Side sleeping is fine once it is comfortable, often after a few days. No position harms the mesh, so comfort is the guide.
  • Roll onto your side to get in and out of bed. A fever, growing swelling or pain that keeps you awake needs a call.

The first few nights after a hernia repair can feel awkward. The groin or belly is sore, and turning over takes thought. Many people worry that lying the wrong way will harm the repair.

It will not. This page explains how to get comfortable and sleep well while you heal.

The easiest position in the first week

Most people find lying on the back the most comfortable. Put a pillow under your knees. This bends the hips a little and relaxes the belly wall, so the wound pulls less.

Two pillows behind your back can help too. After a large repair of the belly wall, some people sleep half sitting in a recliner chair for a few nights.

Getting in and out of bed

  1. Sit on the edge of the bed, then lower yourself onto your side.
  2. Lift your legs onto the bed together and roll onto your back.
  3. To get up, roll onto your side and bend your knees.
  4. Push up with your arms while your legs swing down to the floor.

This log-roll avoids a sit-up, which strains the belly muscles.

Tips for a better night

Take your prescribed pain tablet about half a hour before bed. Keep water, your phone and a light within reach. Hold a pillow over the wound if you need to cough at night.

A short walk in the evening helps the bowel move and makes it easier to fall asleep. Avoid heavy meals late at night.

Signs at night that need a call

Signs at night that need a call

  • Fever, or shivering with chills.
  • Swelling that grows fast, or a wound that turns red or leaks.
  • Pain that keeps getting worse and is not eased by your tablets.
  • Trouble passing urine.

Call your surgeon's team if any of these happen. Do not wait until morning if you feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sleep on my side after hernia surgery?

Yes, once it feels comfortable. Many people manage it within a few days. A pillow between the knees takes strain off the groin.

When can I sleep on my stomach again?

Wait until pressing on the belly no longer hurts. For most people this is around two to three weeks after keyhole or robotic repair.

Can sleeping in the wrong position damage the repair?

No. No sleeping position harms the mesh or stitches. It is only a question of comfort, so lie in the way that hurts least.

Is it normal to sleep badly after surgery?

Yes, for the first few nights. Pain, a new room and the effects of the anaesthetic all disturb sleep. It usually settles within a week.

Should I take a pain tablet before bed?

Taking your prescribed pain tablet about half a hour before bed helps many people sleep. Follow the dose your surgeon gave you.
