In short

  • There is no special diet after hernia repair. Start with light food on the first day, then go back to normal home meals.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat fibre such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Soft stools avoid straining on the fresh repair.
  • Include protein such as dal, curd, paneer, eggs or fish for healing. Go easy on oily, fried and gas-forming food for a few days.

After a hernia repair, many families ask what the patient should eat. Some are told to avoid long lists of foods. Others are told to buy special drinks or powders.

In most cases none of this is needed. This page sets out a simple plan with ordinary home food.

The first meal after the operation

A groin or belly wall repair does not touch the stomach or bowel from inside. So you can eat soon after you wake up.

Start with sips of water. If that stays down, have tea, buttermilk or a light soup. A light meal such as khichdi or dal-rice is usually fine the same evening. Some people feel queasy from the anaesthetic for a few hours, which passes.

Have questions about food, medicines or your own health before a hernia repair? We go through them at your visit.

Why fluids and fibre matter most

Pain tablets and less walking can make stools hard. Straining on the toilet hurts and puts load on the fresh repair.

Drink enough water so your urine stays pale. Eat fruit such as papaya, guava or banana, green vegetables, salad and some whole grains every day. If you still have trouble, ask your doctor about a gentle stool softener.

Protein for healing

The body uses protein to heal the wound and the tissue around the mesh. Dal, chana, rajma, curd, paneer, milk, eggs, fish and chicken are all good sources.

Try to have some protein at each meal. A normal varied diet gives enough. Powders and tonics are not needed unless your doctor advises them.

What to go easy on

1
Very oily, fried or heavy meals in the first few days.
2
Foods that give you gas or bloating.
3
Alcohol, especially while you take pain tablets.
4
Large meals late at night.

If you have diabetes, keep to your usual diet and check your sugar more often. Good sugar control helps the wound heal.

Frequently asked questions

When can I eat after hernia surgery?

Most people sip water a few hours after waking and have a light meal the same evening, once any sickness from the anaesthetic has passed.

Is there a special diet after hernia repair?

No. Normal home food is fine. The aims are simple: drink enough, eat fibre to keep stools soft, and include protein for healing.

Which foods should I avoid after hernia surgery?

Go easy on very oily, fried and heavy food for a few days. Limit foods that give you gas, and alcohol, early on.

Can I eat rice, dal and roti after surgery?

Yes. Dal, rice, roti, khichdi, curd, vegetables and fruit are all good choices. Add some whole grains and salad for fibre.

Does any food make the mesh heal faster?

No. Healing needs a balanced diet with enough protein. No single food, powder or tonic makes a repair heal faster.
