Hernia Surgery Cost in Ahmedabad

Laparoscopic and open hernia repair · itemised estimates and cashless insurance · Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad

Most people who search for the cost of a hernia operation want one number. A hernia repair does not have one. Any figure given before the hernia has been examined is a guess. The price follows what your hernia needs: how big the gap is, whether the muscle will close, which mesh goes in, one side or both, laparoscopic or open, and how many nights you stay. This page sets out what moves the figure, what a fair estimate must show, and how the insurance and cashless route works. It does not quote prices, because a price without your examination would mislead you.

In short: hernia surgery has no single price. The size of the hernia, the mesh, the route and the length of stay decide it. Ask for an itemised estimate.

Dr Harsh Shah is a surgeon of the abdomen and abdominal wall with 18 years of experience. He trained at Maulana Azad Medical College and GB Pant Hospital in Delhi, and holds an MCh and a DrNB in surgical gastroenterology. He repairs hernias by laparoscopic (keyhole) and open methods, and chooses between them for each hernia, not by habit. Each operation note records the defect, the plane and the mesh used, so that any surgeon who sees you later knows what was done.

Seven things that decide what a hernia repair costs

The main drivers are the type and size of hernia, one side or both, the mesh, how the muscle is closed, the route, the length of stay and your room category.
  1. The type and size of the hernia. A small belly button hernia and a large hernia in an old scar share a name, but they are different operations. The larger one needs a bigger mesh, more fixing, more theatre time and often a night or two more in hospital.
  2. One side or both. Groin hernias are often on both sides. Repairing both at one sitting means one anaesthetic, one admission and one recovery. It costs more than one side, and less than two separate operations. See repair of both sides at one anaesthetic.
  3. The mesh. Often the largest single item. A plain light mesh for a groin repair is one thing. A coated mesh that can lie against the bowel is another. The choice is clinical. The layer the mesh will sit in decides it, not the budget.
  4. How the muscle is closed. Some large or repeat hernias will not close without tension. The muscle layers are then separated so the gap can be closed. This is called a component separation or a transversus abdominis release. It is a longer operation with a longer stay, and the biggest step up in cost in hernia surgery.
  5. The route. Laparoscopic repair uses more single-use items in theatre. Open repair uses fewer, but for large hernias it may mean a longer stay. The next section compares them.
  6. The length of stay. Many groin and small belly button repairs are day care or one night. Large ventral and incisional repairs usually need two nights or more.
  7. Your room and your health. The room category changes many lines of the bill. Diabetes, heart or lung disease, or blood thinners can add tests, a higher level of care after surgery, or an extra night.

An emergency repair for trapped bowel costs more than a planned one, and carries more risk. That is one reason not to put off a hernia that is causing trouble. There is a note on what happens if a hernia is not repaired.

Laparoscopic or open: how the route changes the cost

Laparoscopic repair usually costs more on the day because of single-use items. Open repair costs less on the day but may mean a longer stay and slower return to work.
PointLaparoscopic repair (TEP, TAPP, IPOM, eTEP)Open repair
Theatre itemsMore single-use items: ports, tacks or glueFewer single-use items
MeshPlain mesh behind the muscle; coated mesh if placed inside the bellyPlain mesh in most cases
AnaesthesiaGeneralGeneral, spinal or sometimes local
Hospital stayDay care to one night for most groin herniasSimilar for small hernias; often longer for large ones
Return to desk workOften within a weekOften one to two weeks
Both groins at onceSame three small cuts reach both sidesA separate cut for each side
SuitsBoth-sided and repeat groin hernias, many belly wall herniasSingle groin hernias, emergencies, people unfit for general anaesthesia

Neither route is right for every hernia. For a single, first-time groin hernia, an open mesh repair is a sound and less costly operation. For hernias on both sides, or a hernia that came back after an open repair, laparoscopic repair has clear advantages. Dr Harsh Shah recommends the route for your hernia, not for its price, and tells you why. More on laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery and open hernia repair.

How the hernia type changes the estimate

Groin and small belly button hernias are usually the simplest to estimate. Incisional, parastomal and repeat hernias vary most, because their size and closure differ widely.
HerniaUsual routeUsual stayWhat moves the estimate most
Inguinal (groin)Laparoscopic or openDay care to 1 nightOne side or both, route
FemoralLaparoscopic or openDay care to 1 nightPlanned or emergency
Umbilical and epigastricOpen for small, laparoscopic for largerDay care to 1 nightSize of the gap, mesh type
Ventral and incisionalLaparoscopic or open1 to 4 nightsSize, mesh, need for muscle release
Spigelian and lumbarMostly laparoscopic1 to 2 nightsMesh size, route
ParastomalLaparoscopic or open2 to 7 nightsCoated mesh, resiting or closing the stoma
Complex and recurrentPlanned case by case2 nights or moreScar, old mesh, muscle release
HiatalLaparoscopic1 to 3 nightsSize of the hernia, wrap, mesh if used

What a usable estimate must show

Ask for an itemised estimate, not a single total. It should name the mesh, the room, the number of nights, and say clearly what is not included.
Line on the estimateWhat it pays forWhat makes it move

What is excludedItems you will pay for separatelyYour policy and the hospital’s list

A good estimate also says what happens if the plan changes in theatre. A hernia is sometimes bigger than the scan showed. A second hernia is sometimes found beside the first. The right answer is a revised estimate in writing, agreed before surgery where possible, not a surprise at discharge. Expect a range. A precise figure before examination is not more reliable. It is only more confident.

Insurance and the cashless route at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad

Hernia repair is covered by most health policies after any waiting period. Cashless treatment needs pre-authorisation, which our coordinator sends before you are admitted.
  1. Check your policy. Many policies list hernia under a specific waiting period from the start of the policy. Check that it has passed. Note any room rent cap, co-payment or sub-limit.
  2. Consultation and plan. Dr Harsh Shah examines you and confirms the plan: the hernia, the side or sides, the route and the mesh.
  3. Pre-authorisation. The hospital’s insurance desk sends the request with your examination findings and any scans. If both sides are to be repaired, it is stated in the request, not added later.
  4. Approval. The insurer or its third-party administrator replies with an approved amount. Our coordinator tells you what is approved and what is not, before admission.
  5. Discharge and settlement. The final bill goes to the insurer. You pay only the items the policy does not cover, such as some consumables, extra room charges or the co-payment.

Room rent caps matter. If your policy limits room rent and you choose a higher room, many policies reduce other parts of the bill in the same ratio. Choosing a room within the cap can save more than the room difference itself. There is a fuller note on hernia surgery and your insurance claim.

Without insurance. You receive the same itemised estimate. Ask for it in writing, and ask what is likely to change it.

Why the cheapest quote is not always the cheaper operation

The fair comparison is the whole course of care, not the day of surgery. A hernia that comes back, or lasting pain, costs more over time.

Two things drive the long-term cost of a hernia repair. One is the hernia coming back. The other is lasting pain at the repair site. Both mean more visits, more scans and sometimes a second operation. A repeat repair through scarred tissue is a bigger job than the first.

Known causes include a mesh too small for the gap, a repair closed under tension, and fixing that does not respect the nerves of the groin. None of this means a costly repair is a better one. It means you should compare what each estimate includes, not only its total. A second opinion before surgery is reasonable, and there is a note on getting a second opinion.

Questions worth asking before you agree: which mesh is planned and in which layer; one side or both; will the muscle close, or is a release likely; how many nights and in which room; what is not in the estimate; and how you will be told if the plan changes.

What patients say

Your patient journey — five steps

  1. Book your consultation. Call or send a WhatsApp message to book a visit at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna. Bring any scans, your insurance card and policy papers, and notes of any earlier hernia repair.
  2. Tests and treatment plan. Dr Harsh Shah examines you and orders a scan only if it is needed. You leave with the plan and an itemised estimate, and the insurance desk starts the pre-authorisation.
  3. The surgery. At Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad. Most groin repairs take about an hour. Larger repairs take longer.
  4. Short hospital stay. Day care or one night for most groin and small belly button hernias. Two nights or more for large hernias. The final bill is settled with your insurer at discharge.
  5. Follow-up and full healing. A wound check at about one week and a review at about six weeks. These reviews are planned from the start, so you know what they involve.

Questions patients ask

What is the cost of hernia surgery in Ahmedabad?

It depends on the hernia, the route, the mesh, the length of stay and the room. A fair figure can be given only after examination and, where needed, a scan. You receive an itemised estimate at the consultation.

Is laparoscopic hernia surgery more costly than open surgery?

On the day, usually yes, because it uses more single-use items. It may mean a shorter stay and faster return to work. For a single first-time groin hernia, open repair is a sound, less costly choice.

Does health insurance cover hernia surgery?

Most policies do, once any waiting period has passed. Room rent caps, co-payment and sub-limits still apply. Get the approved amount confirmed in writing before admission.

Is cashless treatment available?

Yes, at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Hospital, Vasna, Ahmedabad, with most insurers and third-party administrators. The insurance desk sends the pre-authorisation and tells you what is approved before admission.

Why was I quoted a different figure somewhere else?

Usually because something different was assumed: a different mesh, a different number of nights, a different room or a different route. Compare the line items, not the totals.

Does a mesh add much to the cost?

The mesh is often the largest single item. A coated mesh for use inside the belly costs more than a plain one. The right mesh depends on where it will sit. See which mesh is used.

Will repairing both sides cost twice as much?

No. Both groins repaired at one sitting cost more than one side but less than two separate operations, because the anaesthetic, admission and stay are shared.

Can I get a written estimate before admission?

Yes, and you should. Bring your scans, insurance details and any old operation notes. The estimate is prepared after the hernia has been examined.
